Markets Mixed; Cannabis Stocks Lead Rally
U.S. markets were mixed but broadly higher Monday, with the Nasdaq up about 0.48%, the S&P 500 up 0.26% and the Dow up 0.15%, while futures rose and Treasury yields slipped ahead of September payrolls and amid shutdown concerns. Cannabis stocks led the rally after President Trump posted a video promoting CBD benefits for seniors, with Tilray surging (reports range roughly 41%–61%) and cannabis ETF MSOS jumping about 22%. A reported $55 billion take-private offer for Electronic Arts was a notable premarket mover, while Wolfspeed filed for Chapter 11 to cut debt and Beyond Meat plunged about 33.5% on a major, dilutive debt-restructuring plan. Tech and fintech names contributed to gains — Robinhood hit an all-time high after strong asset growth and trading volume, The Trade Desk jumped on plans for an AI “Audience Unlimited” marketplace, and PayPal rose after unveiling an approximately $7 billion buy-now-pay-later deal with Blue Owl. Guardant Health also gained after FDA approval of its Guardant360 CDx as a companion diagnostic.
