China Lifts Sanctions on European Lawmakers, Resuming Dialogue

China has lifted sanctions against five Members of the European Parliament and the Parliament’s Subcommittee on Human Rights, initially imposed in 2021 in response to EU sanctions over alleged human rights violations. This move, confirmed by European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, paves the way for the resumption of official parliamentary dialogue between the EU and China. The lifting of sanctions comes amid speculation that President Donald Trump’s tariffs could shift global alliances and as Beijing signals interest in closer ties with Europe. European leaders have emphasized that while engagement with China will resume, the Parliament remains committed to defending universal human rights and will not ignore ongoing challenges in EU-China relations. The Parliament had previously halted dialogue and suspended ratification of the EU-China Comprehensive Agreement on Investment due to the sanctions standoff. Diplomatic efforts are ongoing, with EU leaders expected to visit Beijing for a summit later this year.
