Mexico-US Trade Talks Near Deal Ahead 30% Tariff Deadline
As the August 1 deadline for a 30% U.S. tariff on Mexican imports approaches, President Donald Trump and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum plan to hold direct talks to resolve the dispute. Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard expressed optimism about reaching an agreement, emphasizing that Mexico has made significant efforts to avoid the tariffs, which Trump announced would be imposed on products not compliant with the USMCA trade agreement. Meanwhile, U.S. lawmakers from both parties have engaged with Sheinbaum to discuss broader bilateral issues, including trade, immigration reform, security, and commerce, in hopes of easing tensions. Despite strong statements from U.S. officials that no extensions will be granted, Sheinbaum remains confident that ongoing negotiations and Mexico’s proposed trade deficit reduction plan, known as "Plan México," will lead to a resolution. High-level meetings, including one with a bipartisan U.S. congressional delegation and discussions of increased U.S. imports by Mexico, underline Mexico's commitment to dialogue and cooperation. Both governments appear to be working intensively to prevent the tariffs, with potential direct communication between the two presidents anticipated to finalize a deal.
