Montenegro Shooting and Serbia Protest Unrest
Montenegro is dealing with the aftermath of a tragic mass shooting on New Year's Day that claimed 12 lives, including two children, leading to widespread protests for accountability and stricter gun control measures. The shooter, Aco Martinović, died by suicide after the attack, which is considered one of the deadliest in the country's history. In response to public demand, the Montenegrin government has announced new gun control measures to prevent future tragedies. Meanwhile, in Serbia, over 100,000 people gathered in Belgrade to protest against government corruption following the deadly railway station canopy collapse in Novi Sad, which killed 15 people. The protests in Serbia, led by students and joined by various groups, are the largest since the 2000 ouster of Slobodan Milosevic, accusing President Aleksandar Vučić's administration of negligence and corruption. Despite warnings from Vučić, the protests have remained largely peaceful, although tensions are high.
