NSF Terminates Grants for DEI, Misinformation Research

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has announced the termination of hundreds of grants focused on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives and research into misinformation and disinformation, citing a shift in priorities under the Trump administration. According to NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan, research projects with narrow impacts limited to specific subgroups or those aimed at combating online misinformation are no longer considered consistent with the agency’s mission. This move follows executive orders from President Trump, including directives to end federal preferences based on race and sex under DEI policies and to halt federal involvement in efforts perceived as restricting free speech. The agency stated that proposals must now prioritize broader impacts like economic competitiveness and public health, rather than expanding participation of underrepresented groups in STEM as a primary goal. Critics, including researchers and Democrats, argue that these cuts will hinder scientific innovation and reduce support for marginalized communities. The NSF did not specify the exact number of grants affected, but reports indicate at least 402 grants worth $233 million have been canceled.
