Two Fatal Truck Crashes in California and Indiana
Two separate fatal semi‑truck crashes were reported this week: an eight‑vehicle crash on I‑10 in Ontario, California, that killed three people, and a head‑on collision on U.S. 20 in Portage, Indiana, that killed one. In California, authorities and ICE sources identified the suspected truck driver as 21‑year‑old Jashanpreet Singh, whom officials say allegedly drove under the influence, failed to brake, and was in custody on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter while ICE placed a detainer; officials also reported he had been “caught & released” at the California border in March 2022. In Indiana, police say 41‑year‑old Borko Stankovic crossed into oncoming traffic in an unlicensed semi and struck a Subaru, killing 54‑year‑old Jeffrey Eberly; investigators say Stankovic lacked a valid CDL, was using a suspended family member’s license, and his carrier was not DOT‑registered. Portage prosecutors charged Stankovic with felony reckless homicide and felony criminal recklessness, and ICE lodged a detainer after his arrest. Video and witness accounts in the California crash show the tractor‑trailer plowing into slow‑moving traffic without apparent braking, and officials and advocates say both cases highlight concerns about non‑domiciled commercial driver licensing, language proficiency standards, and gaps in immigration enforcement.
