Canada seeks role in Ukraine's post-war security

Canada's Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly emphasized her country's desire to contribute to maintaining peace in Ukraine after the conclusion of the war with Russia. She stated that Canada seeks to be involved in discussions around security guarantees and hopes for a role in protecting Ukraine, especially as the U.S. has sent mixed signals about potentially involving troops in a peace agreement. Joly has urged the U.S. to include Ukraine in peace negotiations, despite concerns that Ukraine may lose territory and be excluded from NATO. During her recent visits to European countries, Joly focused on strengthening Canadian defense and addressing economic challenges posed by the U.S. administration. She also plans to engage with G20 foreign ministers in South Africa to align Canada's G7 priorities with the broader group. Joly reiterated that a resolution to the Ukraine conflict must prevent any future destabilization of Europe by Russia.
