Florida Alligator Alcatraz Detention Center Faces Bipartisan Criticism, Defense
The Trump administration's rapidly constructed detention center in Florida, dubbed 'Alligator Alcatraz,' has drawn sharp criticism from Democratic lawmakers who toured the facility, describing it as an 'internment camp' with detainees packed into cramped cages with minimal sanitation and privacy. Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz and others condemned the center's conditions as appalling, noting 32 detainees per cage with only a few toilets and sinks, forcing detainees to brush their teeth near toilets. Lawmakers noted detainee chants for freedom and reported witnessing young men, some U.S. citizens, in distress, while being denied direct interaction with detainees during the tour. In contrast, Republican lawmakers who toured the facility earlier praised the center's compliance with standards, describing the conditions as comfortable and the food as satisfactory. The detention center, built in just eight days on a remote Everglades airstrip, is part of President Trump’s initiative to increase migrant detention capacity significantly and expedite deportations, but it faces lawsuits alleging environmental harm and constitutional violations. The facility has sparked bipartisan scrutiny over immigration enforcement practices and detainee treatment, highlighting a stark divide in perspectives between Democrats and Republicans.
