ASEAN Observers Deploy to Monitor Thai-Cambodian Border Ceasefire
Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to establish interim observer teams, led by ASEAN defense attachés and coordinated by Malaysia, to monitor a fragile ceasefire along their disputed border following a deadly conflict in late July. The ceasefire agreement includes commitments to halt troop movements, avoid provocations, and maintain open communication channels, though fundamental issues such as the status of 18 Cambodian soldiers captured by Thailand remain unresolved. High-level talks in Kuala Lumpur, attended by officials from both countries and observers from the US, China, and Malaysia, reaffirmed the ceasefire and emphasized the importance of transparency, trust-building, and adherence to agreements to restore peace and stability. The United States, with President Donald Trump having warned of trade repercussions if fighting continued, views the establishment of observer teams as an important step toward a durable and sustainable ceasefire. Both sides continue to accuse each other of ceasefire violations, but the meetings and agreements mark progress toward de-escalation and improved bilateral coordination. The international community has welcomed the outcome as a positive sign of cooperation and commitment to resolving disputes through dialogue.
