Former DC Police Lieutenant Sentenced 18 Months for Leaking Proud Boys Investigation
Former Washington, D.C. police lieutenant Shane Lamond has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for obstructing justice and lying to federal authorities about leaking confidential information to Enrique Tarrio, the former leader of the Proud Boys. Prosecutors alleged Lamond warned Tarrio about an impending arrest related to the burning of a Black Lives Matter banner and provided details about law enforcement investigations, communications which Lamond later tried to conceal by making false statements. While prosecutors sought a four-year sentence, the judge imposed a lesser sentence, citing the serious breach of public trust but noting Lamond did not personally benefit from his actions. Lamond’s defense argued he was attempting to gather intelligence to prevent violence in D.C. following the 2020 election, though the court found his actions undermined police integrity. Tarrio, who was present at the sentencing, called on former President Trump to pardon Lamond, echoing previous pardons given to Trump allies. The case underscores the risks of law enforcement officials developing unauthorized relationships with subjects of investigations, particularly in politically charged contexts.
