US Ends Specialized 988 LGBTQ Youth Hotline Services Nationwide
The federal funding for the specialized LGBTQ youth services within the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline was terminated as of July 17, 2025, ending the 'Press 3' option that connected LGBTQ individuals under 25 to counselors trained in LGBTQ-specific issues. Advocates nationwide express deep concern that without these specialized services, LGBTQ youth may face increased barriers to receiving compassionate and culturally competent care, potentially exacerbating mental health challenges and suicide risks in this vulnerable group. Organizations like Mental Health America of Central Carolinas and crisis centers such as Oregon's Lines for Life anticipate a rise in demand for support, fearing that the removal of this targeted access could discourage youth from seeking help or lead to retraumatization when forced to explain their identities to untrained counselors. Kansas data showed over 1500 calls routed through the LGBTQ service from July 2023 to early 2024, illustrating the critical utilization of the program. Congressional efforts are underway, led by Representative Andrea Salinas, to restore funding and reinstate the specialized lifeline services. Advocates emphasize that having specialized responders who understand and affirm LGBTQ identities is crucial to effective suicide prevention and mental health support for these youth.
