Cool Front Tuesday–Wednesday, Hurricane Melissa Cat 5
A broad swath of the U.S. will be cool and seasonable with highs mainly in the 50s and patchy sunshine Sunday into early this week. A fast-moving cold front will push through Tuesday into Wednesday, bringing mostly light, quick showers (around 0.1–0.25 inch for most areas), strong northwest winds with gusts commonly 30–50 mph that raise fire concerns in parts of the Plains including western Kansas, and much colder nights with frost or freeze risk in portions of the Plains. Cities such as San Antonio will see a dramatic cooldown into the 40s with gusty winds Tuesday. High pressure builds midweek for sunnier, drier weather across many regions, though Pacific systems may clip northern states late in the week with a few rain or mountain snow showers. Earlier expectations of heavier, multi-inch rainfall in parts of the Southeast have diminished with the faster-moving front, reducing widespread heavy-rain threats. Internationally, Hurricane Melissa has rapidly intensified to a Category 5 and is expected to make catastrophic landfall in Jamaica before moving toward eastern Cuba and the Bahamas.
