Attorneys General Sue Trump Administration Over Education Department Layoffs

A coalition of 21 state attorneys general, led by Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, has filed a federal lawsuit against the Trump administration to halt significant layoffs within the Department of Education. The lawsuit claims that these layoffs, which aim to reduce the department's workforce by about 50%, will cripple its ability to fulfill statutory responsibilities, particularly in funding and enforcing educational programs essential for low-income students and those with disabilities. Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes described the administration's actions as an unlawful dismantling of a congressionally-created agency, emphasizing that it threatens public education. Similarly, Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown warned that the cuts would deepen inequities in educational resources across states. The coalition argues that only Congress has the authority to close the department, and they are seeking a court order to stop these actions. Education Secretary Linda McMahon has defended the cuts, stating they are intended to streamline operations and direct more aid to students.
