Hundreds mourn hostage Oded Lifshitz in funeral
Oded Lifshitz, an 84-year-old peace activist and hostage, was laid to rest in Kibbutz Nir Oz, Israel, following his death while in captivity in Gaza. His remains were returned last week under a fragile ceasefire agreement with Hamas, after being abducted during the attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths. The funeral procession drew hundreds of mourners who honored Lifshitz's legacy as a humanitarian and peace advocate, with Israel's President Isaac Herzog emphasizing the need for the return of all hostages. Lifshitz's family expressed sorrow but relief at gaining closure, stating that their healing begins now but will not be complete until every hostage is home. The ceremony featured emotional tributes, with Lifshitz's son recalling his father's commitment to peace rather than revenge. Along the route, mourners displayed signs and flags, singing the national anthem in a show of solidarity and remembrance.
