Trump's Nobel Push Faces Skepticism
Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi said President Donald Trump would deserve a Nobel Peace Prize if Trump helps fully resolve the long-running Rwanda–DR Congo conflict, praised U.S. efforts around a June peace accord and proposed a “minerals‑for‑security” partnership while offering U.S. investors mining and renewable opportunities such as the Inga hydropower project. At the U.N., Trump aggressively lobbied for the prize, claiming he had ended multiple wars, citing deals like the Abraham Accords and saying several leaders had nominated him. Public opinion and experts are broadly skeptical: an Ipsos/Washington Post poll found 76% of Americans say he does not deserve the prize and Republicans are split, and Nobel experts say he is unlikely to win. Committee critics point to actions such as U.S. withdrawals from the WHO and the Paris climate accord, aid cuts, trade disputes with allies and his stance on Gaza as running counter to Alfred Nobel’s aim of advancing international fellowship. The Nobel committee’s independence means it may instead favour humanitarian actors (UNHCR, UNICEF, the Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders or local groups), and analysts say Trump’s overt lobbying — including at the U.N. — is unusual and could be counterproductive ahead of the Oct. 10 announcement.
