Ohio State University Closes Diversity Offices, Eliminates 16 Positions
Ohio State University is closing its Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Center for Belonging and Social Change, effective immediately, due to federal directives aimed at discontinuing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. University President Ted Carter announced that the changes come in response to potential federal funding cuts and a new bill in the Ohio legislature against DEI initiatives. The closures will result in the elimination of 16 staff positions, although the university will assist affected employees in finding alternative roles. Current student scholarships and financial aid will remain intact, though the eligibility criteria for certain programs like the Morrill Scholarship and Young Scholars Program may be adjusted. Carter emphasized that the university aims to uphold values of access and opportunity despite the changing regulatory landscape. The decision has sparked concern among students and faculty about the impact on campus diversity efforts.
