Disney Plans Abu Dhabi Theme Park, Partners with Miral
Disney has announced plans to open its first Middle Eastern theme park resort on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi, partnering with the local Miral Group, which will fully fund and operate the park while Disney provides design, oversight, and intellectual property. The new resort is intended to be 'authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati,' aiming to attract visitors from across the Middle East, Africa, India, Asia, and Europe, capitalizing on the UAE's strategic location within a four-hour flight of one-third of the world's population and its status as a major tourism hub. CEO Bob Iger emphasized that the decision followed careful study of regional demand, noting the park will be the most advanced and interactive in Disney's portfolio and will not impact planned expansions in the United States. This move comes as Disney has recently scaled back its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, drawing attention to the company's evolving approach in light of social controversies related to the UAE's laws. The partnership model mirrors Disney’s approach in Tokyo, minimizing financial risk for the company while expanding its global reach. No opening date has been announced, but Disney officials highlighted that the project will bring Disney experiences to millions who previously faced barriers to visiting its other parks.
