These sanctions mark the first time the U.S. has targeted Chinese entities directly involved in creating entire weapons systems for Russia. The Garpiya series drones, produced in China with Russian firms, have been used to damage critical infrastructure and result in significant casualties. Additionally, Russian national Artem Mikhailovich Yamshchikov, involved in procuring UAV components for these drones, has also been sanctioned. The U.S. aims to disrupt the supply chain supporting Russia's military-industrial base, while China insists its trade with Russia is lawful and does not involve weaponry. The Biden administration underscores the need to pressure Russia through sanctions while maintaining that China's actions contradict its stated intentions.
