US Demands Iraq Free Hostage Elizabeth Tsurkov or Face Consequences
The U.S. has intensified diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Israeli-Russian researcher Elizabeth Tsurkov, who was kidnapped in Iraq in March 2023. Special Envoy Adam Boehler has warned Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani of political and economic repercussions if Tsurkov is not released promptly, asserting that Iraq bears full responsibility for her safety. The Iranian-backed militia Kataib Hezbollah is suspected to be holding her, although they have not officially claimed responsibility. Iraqi officials have stated that they are working to secure her release with the help of Shia political leaders, but negotiations have stalled as the kidnappers reportedly do not seek ransom. Boehler emphasized the urgency of the situation as the second anniversary of Tsurkov's abduction approaches, marking a shift where the U.S. is now taking the lead in negotiations instead of Israel. Concerns have been raised within Iraq about the potential for U.S. sanctions regardless of the investigation's outcome.
