Uber, Lucid, Nuro Set 2026 Robotaxi Rollout

Uber is making a major investment in autonomous vehicles by committing $300 million to Lucid and a multi-hundred-million dollar sum to Nuro, aiming to deploy at least 20,000 Lucid Gravity SUVs with Nuro's Level 4 self-driving technology over six years starting in a major U.S. city in 2026. The robotaxis will be operated exclusively on Uber's platform by Uber or its fleet partners, with prototypes already undergoing testing at Nuro's Las Vegas proving grounds. This marks Uber's return to the robotaxi sector after stepping back in 2018 and positions it as a competitor to Waymo and Tesla. Lucid's stock rose over 29% following the announcement, reflecting strong market optimism. Nuro will take the lead on safety and autonomous systems, leveraging its extensive experience, while Uber expands its global AV partnerships, including new collaborations with Baidu and Waymo.
