NHTSA Intensifies Probe Into Tesla Robotaxi Safety
Federal regulators, led by NHTSA, are intensifying scrutiny of Tesla’s robotaxi service, which is set to launch in Austin in June. The agency's expanded inquiry follows multiple crashes involving Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) system in low-visibility conditions and seeks details on how the camera-only system will ensure safety in emergencies. Regulators are also examining whether Tesla’s robotaxis meet federal safety standards, the level of automation, the possibility of remote supervision, and compliance monitoring. Tesla has begun limited paid ride-hailing operations with employees in Austin and San Francisco and is training first responders, emphasizing its vision- and AI-based approach while rejecting radar and lidar. The broader FSD system remains under federal investigation. Industry experts remain skeptical of Tesla’s readiness, citing ongoing safety concerns and the need for strong regulatory oversight before any national rollout.
