Sinclair, Nexstar Return Kimmel to ABC Affiliates

Sinclair Broadcast Group and Nexstar Media Group ended nearly two-week blackouts of “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” and returned the show to their ABC affiliates after Kimmel’s remarks about the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk sparked criticism. ABC/Disney initially suspended the program amid criticism and warnings from FCC Chair Brendan Carr, and Disney later reinstated the show nationally. Sinclair said it resumed after “constructive discussions” with ABC and feedback from viewers, advertisers and community leaders, while Nexstar praised Disney’s “constructive approach.” Sinclair proposed measures such as a networkwide independent ombudsman but acknowledged ABC/Disney had not adopted them, and a person familiar with the matter said Disney made no editorial concessions. The dispute prompted protests and calls to boycott Disney streaming services, sparked accusations that station groups were courting political pressure (including from former President Trump and the FCC), and raised concerns about free speech, broadcaster accountability and potential FCC penalties. Sinclair and Nexstar together operate roughly 20% of ABC affiliates, meaning their preemptions affected dozens of markets and intersected with local safety concerns, including a shooting at a Sacramento ABC station.
