Democrats Demand Probe After Sherrill Records Leak
The National Archives’ National Personnel Records Center acknowledged it mistakenly released Rep. Mikie Sherrill’s largely unredacted military personnel file — including her Social Security number, date of birth, home addresses, life insurance information, performance evaluations, an NDA and other sensitive details — to Nicholas De Gregorio, an ally of her Republican gubernatorial opponent, after a FOIA request. The NPRC apologized, said a technician failed to follow protocols, offered Sherrill free credit monitoring, and pledged staff accountability, policy review and additional training to prevent similar breaches. Democrats, including the entire New Jersey congressional delegation, House leaders Hakeem Jeffries and Robert Garcia, and the DNC, have called for House committee inquiries and urged a criminal probe, accusing the Archives and the administration of weaponizing government records for political purposes. The released files also showed Sherrill did not march at her 1994 Naval Academy graduation after declining to report classmates who cheated, a detail her campaign says opponents are exploiting in the tightly contested New Jersey governor’s race. Sherrill’s campaign has sent cease-and-desist letters to the National Archives and to Republican nominee Jack Ciattarelli’s campaign as the controversy intensifies.
