Miami Airport's Massive Valentine's Flower Import
In preparation for Valentine's Day, Miami International Airport has processed approximately 940 million stems of cut flowers, primarily from Colombia and Ecuador, which constitute about 90% of the fresh flowers sold in the U.S. for the occasion. Avianca Cargo, Miami's largest flower importer, has significantly increased its shipments to meet the seasonal demand, transporting around 18,000 tons of flowers on 300 full cargo flights. Flowers are one of the largest imports to Miami, accounting for nearly 400,000 tons of cargo worth over $1.6 billion annually. U.S. Customs and Border Protection specialists are tasked with inspecting the influx of flowers for harmful pests and diseases, crucial to preventing invasive species that cause significant economic and environmental damage. The surge in flower imports underscores the immense logistical efforts required to supply the North American market during this peak period, with Miami serving as a critical hub for distribution.
