Dozen GOP Attorneys General Visit Southwest Border Supporting Trump-Era Security Measures
Kentucky Republican Attorney General Russell Coleman joined a coalition of GOP attorneys general and local law enforcement officials at the U.S.-Mexico border in Yuma, Arizona, to support enhanced border security measures championed by the Trump administration. Coleman and others highlighted a dramatic reduction in illegal border crossings—from about 1,500 per day during the Biden administration to as few as four per day under Trump—and credited this to Trump’s leadership. The group advocated for stronger collaboration between state, local, and federal law enforcement, including expansion of 287(g) agreements that enable local agencies to assist ICE in immigration enforcement. They also called for increased funding and infrastructure, such as the proposed "Big Beautiful Bill Act," which includes over $40 billion for border wall construction. Coleman emphasized the connection between border security and the opioid epidemic in Kentucky, pointing out that fentanyl, often trafficked across the southern border, was involved in over 62% of overdose deaths in the state, and warned against programs like Entry Type 86 that could allow dangerous drugs to enter with minimal screening. The coalition’s visit and statements reflect ongoing Republican efforts to pressure the Biden administration on immigration enforcement and border security policies.
