US Reviews Humanitarian Aid Efforts in Gaza

The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) Inspectors General have initiated coordinated, phased reviews of the humanitarian aid delivery efforts to Gaza through a $230 million temporary pier. The reviews will assess the roles and effectiveness of both agencies in facilitating aid, with particular attention to the transfer of aid to the United Nations' World Food Programme (WFP). The pier, established in May, has faced operational challenges due to rough seas and security concerns, resulting in intermittent functionality. Despite these issues, it has been critical in transporting millions of pounds of aid to Gaza, where the humanitarian situation remains dire. The project has received criticism for its high cost and operational setbacks, and there are ongoing concerns from both U.S. lawmakers and international bodies regarding its sustainability and security.
