Philippine, Chinese Vessels Collide Near Escoda Shoal

The Philippines and China have exchanged accusations following a collision between their coast guard vessels in the disputed South China Sea near the Escoda Shoal on August 19, 2024. The Philippines claims its vessels, BRP Bagacay and BRP Cape Engaño, were damaged due to 'unlawful and aggressive maneuvers' by Chinese coast guard ships while delivering supplies to Philippine outposts. China, however, blamed the Philippines for 'deliberately' ramming into its vessel and accused them of violating territorial agreements and sovereignty. Videos released by the Chinese Coast Guard purportedly show the collision, while Philippine authorities maintain their right to operate in what they call the West Philippine Sea, citing international law. Tensions have been escalating between the two nations over sovereignty claims in the region, with both sides warning of further consequences if provocations continue.
