Scotch whisky exports rise 3.9% in volume, decline 3.7% in value

In 2024, Scotch whisky exports experienced a notable rise in volume but a decline in value, with the value dropping by 3.7% to £5.4 billion. The Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) reported a 3.9% increase in export volume, amounting to 1.4 billion bottles, attributed to changing consumer preferences amidst a challenging trading environment. India has regained its title as the top export market by volume with 192 million bottles, while the US remains the largest market by value at £971 million. SWA chief executive Mark Kent highlighted the strain on distillers due to a 14% tax increase over the past 18 months, urging government support to mitigate rising domestic pressures and turbulent global trading conditions. The SWA is advocating for reduced excise duties and improved trade relations to alleviate the industry's challenges. Overall, while exports have risen compared to pre-Covid levels, the outlook for 2025 remains uncertain as the industry braces for further difficulties.
