Aix-Marseille University Welcomes US Scientists Facing Funding Cuts

Aix-Marseille University in France has launched a program to attract American scientists facing funding cuts under the Trump administration, particularly in climate and health research. Dubbed the 'Safe Place for Science', this initiative aims to provide a supportive environment for researchers who may feel threatened or hindered in their work. The university will allocate between €10 million and €15 million to host around 15 scientists over three years. University president Eric Berton expressed regret over the necessity of such a program but highlighted the real dangers posed by funding cuts, especially for those working on sensitive subjects. French higher education officials have called for broader European support for international scientists, while protests in solidarity with affected researchers in the U.S. are also being organized. Previously, Aix-Marseille University has welcomed researchers from regions in conflict, showcasing its commitment to academic freedom and support for displaced scholars.
