Trump gives Hamas Sunday deadline to accept plan
President Donald Trump posted on Truth Social an ultimatum giving Hamas until Sunday at 6 p.m. Washington time to accept a US- and regionally-backed 20-point Gaza peace plan or face severe consequences, warning “all hell, like no one has ever seen before, will break out” and saying many Hamas fighters are “militarily trapped.” The plan demands immediate release of all hostages, disarmament and relinquishing of governing authority by Hamas, and includes a 72-hour timeline for returning hostages in exchange for prisoner releases, amnesty for those who decommission weapons, and large-scale aid and reconstruction overseen by international and regional actors. Trump urged civilians to evacuate high-risk areas and said wealthy regional states, the US and Israel have signed on; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has signalled support while opposing creation of a Palestinian state. Hamas leaders have either rejected the proposal or said they would review it, calling parts tantamount to their destruction and arguing the hostage demand strips them of leverage. The ultimatum has endangered a fragile ceasefire, drawn UN appeals for calm, and heightened anxiety among hostage families as the Sunday deadline nears.
