Gabbard Advances Toward Confirmation as National Intelligence Director
The U.S. Senate voted 52-46 to advance Tulsi Gabbard's nomination as director of national intelligence, setting the stage for a final confirmation vote expected later this week. Gabbard, a former Democratic Congresswoman, faced significant scrutiny during her confirmation process, particularly regarding her past comments on NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden and her controversial meeting with former Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. Despite these concerns, she garnered support from Senate Republicans, including Majority Leader John Thune, who praised her commitment to reforming intelligence operations. Democratic senators, however, raised alarms about Gabbard's judgment and experience, particularly in light of recent actions by the Trump administration affecting intelligence agencies. The Senate Intelligence Committee had previously recommended her nomination in a narrow party-line vote. If confirmed, Gabbard will oversee the U.S. intelligence community and advise President Trump on national security matters.
