Las Vegas Police Resist Trump's Immigration Enforcement

Following President Donald Trump's return to office and his renewed focus on deporting undocumented immigrants, local police departments in Las Vegas, Henderson, and North Las Vegas have declared they will not assist in federal immigration enforcement efforts, including mass deportation 'roundups'. Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department reaffirmed that their officers will not enforce immigration laws or participate in roundups, maintaining a policy first established in 2019. The LVMPD will, however, notify ICE of foreign-born individuals arrested for violent felonies or DUIs. Similarly, Henderson police confirmed they will not assist with deportations, and North Las Vegas police indicated it is too early to determine their role in Trump's plans. This stance highlights a broader resistance among local law enforcement to prioritizing federal immigration enforcement over community policing and local crime issues. Trump's administration has threatened to withdraw federal grants from jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities.
