Supreme Court Denies Trump's Delay in Sentencing
The U.S. Supreme Court has denied President-elect Donald Trump's final attempt to delay sentencing in his felony hush-money case, allowing Judge Juan M. Merchan to proceed with sentencing scheduled for January 10. In a 5-4 ruling, the Court reasoned that the burden of sentencing was not substantial, especially since Merchan indicated Trump would receive no jail time or probation. Trump expressed respect for the Court's decision and indicated he would pursue an appeal, claiming the case against him was politically motivated and a 'disgrace'. On the same day, a federal appeals court also rejected efforts to block the release of Special Counsel Jack Smith's report on Trump's attempts to overturn the 2020 election. Trump's legal team had sought to delay sentencing while appealing the conviction, but the justices determined that these issues could be addressed in the normal appeals process. Notably, Trump will be the first President to assume office with a felony conviction.
