Chevron CEO Mike Wirth has sharply criticized the Biden administration's moratorium on new liquefied natural gas (LNG) export permits, arguing that it raises energy costs, jeopardizes energy security for U.S. allies, and slows the transition from coal to natural gas, which could increase emissions. Speaking at the Gastech conference, Wirth described the policy as prioritizing politics over progress and failing to advance economic prosperity, energy security, and environmental protection. He emphasized that natural gas is essential for reducing emissions and supporting technological advancements, including artificial intelligence. The moratorium, enacted in January, has faced backlash from industry leaders, some of whom have called the decision irrational and a setback for U.S. leadership in the global LNG market. Despite a federal court overturning the moratorium in July, no new licenses have been issued since.
