Tropical Storm Alvin Expected to Form Off Mexico, Kicking Off 2025 Pacific Season
Meteorologists predict the first tropical storm of the 2025 Eastern Pacific hurricane season, likely to be named Tropical Storm Alvin, will form within the next 48 hours off the southwestern coast of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) reports an almost 100% chance of development from an elongated area of low pressure moving west-northwestward, with favorable environmental conditions supporting intensification. While Alvin poses little threat to the U.S., its remnants could bring heavy rainfall to parts of the southwestern U.S., including Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, later in the week. Forecasts indicate the storm may weaken before reaching land due to cooler waters and wind shear but could still cause localized heavy rain and gusty winds along Mexico’s west-central coast. The Eastern Pacific hurricane season began on May 15, earlier than the Atlantic season, and this early formation is notable since the Northern Hemisphere has yet to see any named storms in 2025. Experts highlight that the development of Alvin would break the recent trend of late season starts, with the last late first named storm recorded in 1973.
