India-US Trade Talks Aim for $500 Billion Deal

India is advancing its trade discussions with the US, aiming to finalize key details within six weeks, with talks that were initiated in February during Prime Minister Modi's visit. The discussions focus on achieving a bilateral trade worth USD 500 billion by 2030. Virtual discussions are set to start this week, with in-person talks scheduled for mid-May. Despite recent US-imposed reciprocal tariffs, India remains optimistic about negotiating a beneficial provisional trade agreement. India has already reduced tariffs on numerous US goods and is considering further reductions on agricultural products, although this remains a sensitive issue. Both nations seek to set realistic goals, with mutual trade liberalization efforts expected to include tariffs and non-tariff barriers.
