SDLP declines St Patrick's Day events over Gaza stance
The Social Democratic and Labour Party (SDLP) has announced it will not participate in St Patrick's Day celebrations at the White House for the second consecutive year due to concerns over the U.S. government's stance on Gaza. SDLP leader Claire Hanna emphasized that attending the event would contradict the party's values, stating they cannot endorse the U.S. while it supports violence in Gaza. The party's decision follows previous remarks by former leader Colum Eastwood, who expressed similar concerns regarding U.S. arms sales to Israel. While Northern Ireland's First Minister and Deputy First Minister have not confirmed their attendance, Hanna indicated that the SDLP will continue to engage with American allies outside of the St Patrick's Day festivities. The SDLP's stance reflects a broader ethical approach to U.S. foreign policy, particularly under President Trump's administration, which they find at odds with their principles. Hanna highlighted that the party's absence is a statement of solidarity with those suffering in Gaza and a rejection of the current political climate in the U.S.
