The committee, led by Rep. Virginia Foxx, claims Walz and his administration failed to adequately oversee the Minnesota Department of Education's management of federal funds, leading to substantial misappropriation. At least 70 individuals have been charged in the scheme, with five already convicted. This investigation has gained renewed attention following Walz's selection as the Democratic vice-presidential nominee. The subpoenas also target Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and other officials, indicating a broader inquiry into the federal response to the fraud. A spokeswoman for Walz stated that the state worked diligently to prevent the fraud and expressed concern over the misuse of federal funds intended to feed children.
