Sydney Plans Citywide Ban on Gas Appliances in New Buildings by 2027
Sydney's City Council has approved a comprehensive ban on gas appliances in new buildings starting January 1, 2027, extending previous restrictions on indoor gas stoves and heaters to include all outdoor gas appliances such as barbecues and heaters across residences and commercial buildings. Lord Mayor Clover Moore emphasized that this transition to full electrification aims to improve public health by reducing asthma cases linked to gas stoves, lower costs for residents, and reduce environmental harm caused by methane leaks from natural gas. Despite broad community and industry support for the reforms, including endorsements from Ausgrid and the Property Council, critics argue that the ban could lead to higher household bills, increased blackout risks, and complications for the building sector. The ban reflects a growing trend in Australia, with similar measures already implemented in Victoria, the Australian Capital Territory, and other Sydney councils. Opposition voices, including industry groups like Urban Taskforce Australia, caution that removing consumer choice and mandating electrification could affect project feasibility and housing affordability. The City of Sydney remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2035, viewing the phase-out of gas as a critical step towards sustainability.
