IAEA Reports Drone Explosion Near South Ukraine Nuclear Plant Amid Safety Concerns
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported that a drone exploded approximately 800 meters from the perimeter of Ukraine's South Ukraine Nuclear Power Plant after being shot down, with 22 drones observed in the area during the night of September 24-25. Although the plant's three reactors continued operating at full capacity and no damage was inflicted on the nuclear facility itself, nearby structures and a power line were damaged, raising serious concerns about nuclear safety amid ongoing conflict. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi warned that drones flying so close to nuclear plants pose significant risks and urged all parties to exercise maximum military restraint around critical nuclear sites. The incident highlights the increased use of drones in conflict zones and the growing threat they pose to nuclear security. Additionally, the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant has been without external power for over two days, relying on emergency diesel generators, further exacerbating safety concerns. Grossi met with Russian President Vladimir Putin amid these tensions and continues to call for strengthened coordination and cooperation to protect nuclear facilities in Ukraine.
