Israel Dismantles Jenin Camp, Displaces 40,000 Palestinians

Israeli bulldozers have demolished large sections of the nearly deserted Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank, echoing tactics previously used in Gaza, as Israeli troops prepare for a prolonged military presence. Since the initiation of this operation, at least 40,000 Palestinians have evacuated their homes in Jenin and the nearby Tulkarm. Basheer Matahen, spokesperson for the Jenin municipality, remarked that the camp has become uninhabitable, likening the situation to the earlier clearance of the Jabalia camp in Gaza. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has ordered troops to prepare for an extended stay, with plans indicating the camps will be cleared for the coming year. This operation is one of the largest in over two decades, with significant military involvement including drones, helicopters, and heavy battle tanks. While Israel maintains that its actions are aimed at combating Hamas, critics express concern over the humanitarian implications for the displaced Palestinian population.
