Rwanda, DR Congo Near Finalization of Peace Agreement in June
Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have submitted a draft peace agreement, facilitated by the United States, aimed at ending the prolonged conflict in eastern DRC that has resulted in thousands of deaths and the displacement of millions. The peace process, marked by recent diplomatic efforts and a US-brokered declaration to respect each other's sovereignty, is expected to culminate in a signing ceremony in Washington, D.C., by mid-June, with the participation of both nations' presidents and US officials. The conflict, intensified by the M23 rebels' offensive and allegations of Rwandan support, has severely affected the region, which is rich in critical minerals vital to global industries. Key steps remain, including finalizing the agreement's terms and establishing accompanying economic arrangements that could see significant Western investment in Congolese and Rwandan mining sectors. The process has garnered international attention given both the humanitarian crisis and the region's strategic mineral resources. While the peace deal offers hope for ending hostilities, the situation remains complex, with ongoing accusations and the presence of multiple armed groups in the area.
