DOJ Investigates Chicago Hiring After Mayor's Remarks
The U.S. Department of Justice has opened a civil rights investigation into Chicago's hiring practices after Mayor Brandon Johnson highlighted the number of Black officials in his administration during remarks at a South Side church. The probe, announced by Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon, will examine whether the city has engaged in a pattern or practice of race-based discrimination in violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Johnson emphasized the diversity of his administration and efforts to create opportunities for Black people in city government and contracting. The Justice Department expressed concern that race-based decision-making at high levels might extend throughout the administration. Johnson’s office responded with pride in the administration’s diversity and pledged to review the DOJ’s letter upon receipt. The investigation coincides with a broader national debate over diversity policies and follows recent federal civil rights actions involving other governments.
