Russia's Oct. 5–6 Massive Strikes on Ukraine
Russia launched a massive overnight assault on Oct. 5–6 using roughly 500 attack drones and more than 50 missiles, including Shahed drones and Kinzhal ballistic missiles, striking at least nine regions across Ukraine and prompting widespread air-defense intercepts, Ukrainian officials said. The strikes killed at least five people (some reports put the toll at six), including four members of one family in Lviv — one a 15‑year‑old — and a civilian in Zaporizhzhia, and injured dozens as fires, power outages and damage hit homes, industrial sites, transport and energy infrastructure. Lviv, long seen as a relative haven, suffered hours-long bombardment in its largest assault since 2022, leaving districts without power, suspending public transport and igniting large fires. A separate drone strike on Shostka railway station struck two passenger trains in quick succession in a “double tap” attack, killing one, injuring about 30 and knocking out local power. Kyiv said it struck Russia’s Kirishi/Kinef oil refinery, and NATO members and Poland scrambled jets or raised readiness amid cross-border drone sightings. Ukrainian officials said the strikes appeared aimed at crippling energy and gas infrastructure ahead of winter and urged faster delivery of air defenses, while Moscow warned against supplying long-range missiles such as Tomahawks.
