Australian Universities Urged to Combat Campus Antisemitism

Recent inquiries in Australia have highlighted a troubling rise in antisemitism on university campuses, prompting calls for significant reforms to address the issue. The Parliamentary Joint Committee on Human Rights reported an 'alarming' increase in antisemitic incidents among students and staff, leading to ten recommendations aimed at improving campus safety and accountability. These include establishing a central complaint management office, adopting a clear definition of antisemitism, and enhancing transparency through the publication of complaints reports. Additionally, concerns were raised about specific incidents, such as the inaction of Macquarie University regarding an academic's anti-Semitic comments and the need for universities to take Jewish students' concerns seriously. The inquiry’s chair, MP Josh Burns, emphasized that proactive leadership is essential for fostering a safe educational environment.
