Gallup Poll Shows Two-Thirds Democrats Favor Socialism Over Capitalism
A recent Gallup poll reveals a significant shift in political attitudes, with 66% of Democrats now viewing socialism favorably compared to only 42% who view capitalism positively. This marks a continued trend since 2016 of Democrats favoring socialism over capitalism, contrasting sharply with Republicans, 74% of whom maintain a positive view of capitalism while only 14% favor socialism. Overall, Americans' favorable view of capitalism has declined to 54%, the lowest since tracking began in 2010, while socialism has seen a slight increase to 39%. This ideological shift is reflected in local politics, such as New York City’s Democratic Socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, who supports policies like a $30 minimum wage and increased taxes on wealthier neighborhoods, garnering endorsements from progressive leaders but cautious responses from some party moderates. The divide within the Democratic Party highlights tensions over the party’s direction after its 2024 defeat, with Republicans viewing the rise in socialist support as a potential advantage in upcoming elections. Additionally, skepticism toward capitalism and large corporations is growing among Democrats and independents, while Republicans remain broadly critical of socialism, mindful of historical precedents.
