Mediators Propose 5-7 Year Gaza Truce Amid Ongoing Talks
Mediators from Egypt and Qatar have presented a new proposal to end the conflict in Gaza, offering a five to seven-year ceasefire and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from the territory. The plan includes a comprehensive exchange: all remaining Israeli hostages would be released by Hamas in return for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails. Additionally, the proposal calls for a formal end to the war, reconstruction efforts in Gaza, and a full lifting of the blockade. Hamas has shown willingness to relinquish governing control of Gaza to a Palestinian administration agreed upon at the national and regional level, potentially involving the Palestinian Authority or a new technocratic entity. The proposal is being discussed in Cairo with delegations from Hamas and Israel, and has attracted international attention, including from the US. While Israel has not officially commented on the proposal, the talks mark the first significant progress after months of deadlock.
