SEC Launches Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit to Combat Fraud

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced the establishment of the Cyber and Emerging Technologies Unit (CETU), which replaces the previous Crypto Assets and Cyber Unit, signaling a shift toward a broader focus on cyber-related misconduct rather than exclusively on cryptocurrency. Led by Laura D’Allaird, the CETU will consist of approximately 30 fraud specialists and will address issues related to digital assets, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity compliance. Acting Chairman Mark Uyeda emphasized the unit's dual role in protecting investors while facilitating market innovation. This development reflects a more lenient regulatory approach towards cryptocurrencies, contrasting sharply with the previous administration's aggressive enforcement tactics. The CETU aims to combat various forms of fraud, including those using blockchain technology and social media platforms. As the SEC adapts its strategy, the new unit will complement existing efforts to tackle fraud in digital markets.
