Michael Stipe, Brandi Carlile Lead Album Benefiting Democracy Forward Legal Work
A new double vinyl album titled "Democracy Forward" will be released on July 4 to benefit the legal organization Democracy Forward, which is dedicated to defending democracy, the U.S. Constitution, and the rule of law. The compilation features artists such as Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Brandi Carlile, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Wilco, Brittany Howard, Tyler Childers, and John Prine, with Stipe contributing a spoken word piece titled "Invocation." Democracy Forward has actively challenged several Trump administration policies, including immigration agreements and federal funding freezes, emphasizing the ongoing fight to protect democratic values. Michael Stipe, in a recording on the album, highlights the critical importance of democracy and the collective responsibility to save it, saying, "The world is depending on us. This fight is not over. The day is not done." Skye Perryman, president and CEO of Democracy Forward, underscores the role of music and art in fostering community and courage during challenging times and expresses gratitude to the artists supporting the cause. Proceeds from the $46 album will support Democracy Forward's legal work, including free representation for individuals and communities to defend their constitutional rights.
