Vietnam Fast-Tracks Starlink License Amid U.S. Trade Concerns

Vietnam's Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has announced plans to expedite the licensing process for Elon Musk's Starlink to provide satellite internet services under a pilot scheme. This decision aims to address the country's significant trade surplus with the U.S., which has made Vietnam vulnerable to potential tariffs. Chinh directed the Ministry of Science and Technology to swiftly issue the necessary permits, following discussions with U.S. business representatives. The Vietnamese government is also exploring increased imports of U.S. goods, including aircraft, military technology, and liquefied natural gas, as part of its strategy to rebalance trade dynamics. The initiative reflects Vietnam's commitment to enhancing its technological infrastructure while managing its economic relationships amidst global trade tensions. The licensing process follows a parliamentary approval from February that allows foreign satellite internet providers to operate in Vietnam while retaining local control.
